Copper Head Gasket (AF460 Vs. Standard)
Can anyone tell me what the difference/benefit is between a standard copper head gasket and the AF460 copper head gasket (as featured on the minisport website)? cheers bob

Head Gasket??
Looks like its time for a change? Ive figured out which parts I need, the real question is how hard is the job of replacing it?? Can someone of average mechanical ability do this? Would this be a good time to add a duplex timing chain (while the head is off), or are they totally unrelated? Im assuming the head gasket is failing - oil leaking from beneath head just above dizzy (tightening stud nut helped slightly, but didnt totally stop it), sputtering badly under heavy throttle (could alos be water in gas or wet dizzy - similar symptoms), loss of power during sputter. The sputter is inconsistent in that backing off power usually brings it back into range. It also doesnt do it under consistent acceleration conditions (ie. sometimes I can accelerate much harder before sputtering begins). No water in oil that I can tell. Am I on the right track?? Sputtering began today after an hour long drive (oil leak started about five days ago). Thanks for any and all advice... Vince

Engine steady and head gasket
Hi, Ive got to problems one is that the previous own of my mini (1995 cooper) managed to mistreat it enough to brake the left enginestead bolt in the block thus making the engine bounce around everytime any gas is applied, so anybody any ideas how i can fix it?. The second is i think it needs the head gasket change as there are reports of it running on three and it loses oil and water it needs a rocker cover gasket anyway, now it seems to be quite straight forward but ill get my mate ( a mechanic) to help but is it worth doing this at the same time as fixing the other problem?

head gasket
In our sport we use +20 +40 and +60 pistons. I use +40s for 3 years and under race conditions and a standard head gasket seems to be totally fine so i am sure it should also be fine with +20 pistons. some people use +60 pistons with a standard head gasket and it is fine for a while but they are quite likely to split between cylenders 3 and 4. It sounds like the big end bearing have gone!! i have never used a 1300 head gasket on a 998 but i think that it would probably be fine as i have stripped engines that have had them in.

Head Gaskets
hi, im doing up a mini with a hot 998 engine. i plan to put a 12g940 on it off of a mg metro. i have the 1275 gasket lined up to the block with the studs and it looks as if the water galerys at either end do not match. the gasket covers aprox half of each. Is there a simple remidy to this? The block as been pocketed ready and the oil galery matches perfectly. i was lead to believe that this was the problem, not the water ones.

Ok from my reckoning the head gasket has gone bang, got lovely whitish oil and the oil pressure has dropped. Also losing lots of water when engine is cold. Just wondering, when changing the gasket, is it worth having the head skimmed ?, and are there any other parts worth changing at the same time to prolong the life of the new gasket. Cheers Nick P

NO! Definately do not use any kind of sealer on a head gasket!... not unless you want to do the job yet again VERY soon....

The genuine Payen 'Felpro' type black gaskets are the business. The AF460 copper/composite gaskets are really poor since they quit putting the asbestos mix filling in them. I fit the genuine head gasklets to everything large-bore orientated, including al lthe race motors I build. They are perfect. Almost as good as the original Metro Turbo silver versions. If you are having problems with head gaskets - you have a problem some place else. Most common cause of them going is over-torquing - 42lb ft only. Any more and the gasket fire ring gest squeezed way too much - makes a sharp edge hanging out in the combustion chamber that ends up getting burnt away. That or the steel fillets between the cylinders gets twisted out of shape. It's also common on 1380 type over-bores where the bores were not checked for centrality with the gasket befor ebeing bored out. Some blocks have bores way out of line - when over-bored the fire ring ends up sticking out over the top of the bore. KC.

yeah one other thing if ur engine has overheated in past or has not been removed correctly then the head can get a slight destortion making it prone to gasget failure and will reqire a light skin to remove this.

Incidentally - the dark staining that appears on the block and head faces on the rear (push rod side) are not caused by increased heat as many believe - it is meerly water staining/rust caused by a very slight water blled from the three block to head transfer ports. These later black gaskets do not have ring seals around these holes in the gasket like the copper ones do. It is not a problem except where weak/old studs are used, or rockers with aluminium posts. Both of these 'relax' in use/when hot, reducing the clamping pressure set when torqued down. I have considered using a VERY thin smear of sealnat in this area alone to see what happens - but haven'ty really had the need to rty it yet. KC

thanks for all the help, much appreciated, in regards to the problems i am having, i beleibve it could be due to under torquing, as when i undid the head nuts, the head lifted away with the nuts, so assume it didnt seal properly.
Is there a part number for this head gasket, sorry but want to be sure i get the right one,
Cheers
